Ballroom Dancing

 

 

Modern Waltz

 

The Modern or “Slow” waltz is a romantic dance that originally dates back to at least the 18th Century when it was performed as an Austrian Folk Dance. It is one of the 5 dances performed in International Ballroom Dance competitions.

 

Foxtrot

 

The Foxtrot is a slow and elegant dance that was adapted for use in the Ballroom from a stage act that was performed prior to 1920. It gained popularity throughout the 1920’s being danced to much of the popular music of the time. It is a challenging dance to master but eventually provides great satisfaction from its graceful movements. This dance is also among the 5 dances performed in International Competitions.

 

Quickstep

 

This dance evolved from the Foxtrot during the latter part of the 1920’s and, with its quick and energetic movements proves to be very popular with Ballroom Dancers. This is another of the five International Ballroom Competition Dances.

 

Ballroom Tango

 

This is another of the International Competition dances that was developed for the Ballroom from the Argentine Tango that is a dance of seduction.

 

Viennese Waltz

 

The last of the 5 International Ballroom Competition dances, this dates back to the time when Strauss and other composers were providing dance music for the Viennese nobility and aristocracy . Although this dance is still danced on social occasions, it is more usual for the Modern Waltz to be used.
