Latin American Dancing
Cha Cha Cha
The Ballroom Cha Cha Cha has been a very popular dance since the 1950’s. It is a lively, fun dance that takes its name from the the “cha cha cha” movement of the feet on the floor. There are a number of versions of Cha Cha Cha from various parts of the world but the version that is danced in Dance Halls today is related to the original Cuban Cha Cha. This is one of 5 dances performed in International Latin American Competitions.
Rumba
The slowest of the Latin American dances is a sensual dance that involves a number of rumbling rhythms and, although the timing is difficult to master initially, provides a very popular dance for social occasions as well as being performed in International Latin American Competition.
Samba
The Samba originated from the carnivals in the streets of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The Samba danced in International competitions and on dance floors is a lively dance but differs from the original Brazilian Party dance.
Paso Doble
The Paso Doble represents a bullfight with the man being the matador and the lady his cape. In the dance the lady is used in provocative postures in order to entice the bull and it incorporates a great deal of the feel of flamenco in its performance. It is also an International Competition Dance.
Ballroom Jive
Jive has been performed in various formats over a period of time and is regularly seen at social occasions. The Ballroom Jive has evolved from various other versions that have been performed over time since the 1920’s. Its development is influenced by the Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Swing and Rock and Roll. It is the last of the 5 International Latin American Dances.
Mambo
Effectively a faster version of the Rumba with some added moves, the Mambo gained popularity on UK dance floors when Lou Bega released “Mambo No. 5”. Often danced to 1950s style Cuban Jazz music it could be said to be the forerunner of the Salsa.
Salsa
Salsa is the hot Latin dance of the moment with its fun steps and lively movements being performed to various Cuban, Puerto Rican and Columbian rhythms.
